In 1962, with the “Law on Opening a New Technical School in Zonguldak” numbered 165, while the studies were continuing in Zonguldak, the State Engineering and Architecture Academy was established with the law numbered 1184. The Civil Engineering Department is one of the 4 departments included in the academy establishment law. However, students could not be accepted to the Civil Engineering Department until 1997. Education and training were first started in 1997 with 20 students under the ZKU Faculty of Engineering. In 2002, the departments of Mechanics, Construction Management and Construction Materials were added to the undergraduate program and the number of departments was increased from 4 to 7. Starting from the 2003-2004 academic year, compulsory preparatory class application and English-supported education were implemented. The Civil Engineering Department continues its education and training in the buildings and facilities located in the ZKU Central Campus. Since the 2002-2003 academic year, postgraduate education has started in the departments of Construction, Hydraulics, Geotechnics, Construction Materials, Construction Management, Transportation and Mechanics. Since the 2011-2012 academic year, there is a second-year undergraduate program and since the 2021-2022 academic year, there is a doctoral program.
